The Gidabo Irrigation Dam project, which was built at a cost of more than 1.1 billion birr, will be inaugurated next week, January 22, 2019, according to the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity.

The dam, with a reservoir capacity of 62.5 million metric cubic, is located between the Oromia and SNNP regional state and will adequately irrigate 13, 425 hectares of land, the Ministry said on its Facbook page.

More than 10,000 farmers and over 192,000 unemployed youth would benefit from the irrigation scheme. It is also expected to attract agricultural investment to the area.

According to the Ministry, the completion date of the project was extended due to design changes.

The dam, which has a height of 25.8 metres and a length of 335 metres, was built by Construction Works Corporation and Construction Works Design and Supervision Corporation participated in consulting.

The construction of the project had created 1, 072 permanent and temporary jobs.

Elders, Religious Leaders Urged To Do More For Sustainable Peace

The Minister of Peace Muferiat Kamil has urged elders and religious leaders to play a key role more than ever for a sustainable peace and development of the country.

Speaking at a national peace conference held today under the team “Elders for National Peace,” the Minister said elders and religious leaders should pass on national good values and wisdom to the young generation.

After extending her gratitude for the efforts they have made so far, Muferiat called on some groups that are collaborating with anti-peace elements under the guise of elders to refrain from their attempts to spoil peace.

The Minister further underscored the need to stand united, agree on national agendas and listen to each other in order to maintain peace.

Muferiat also called on participants of the conference to back government’s efforts by organizing public consultations and peace conferences in their respective areas.

The Minister finally pledged that the government will strengthen its efforts in addressing current challenges and maintaining rule of law.

Ethiopian Cultural Diplomacy Day, an event that aims to promote Ethiopia’s cultural and historical assets to the international community, has been celebrated today.

African Ambassadors, diplomats and African Union (AU) Commissioners attended the celebration held at Entoto and Yaya Village, Haile’s Athletics Museum.

Foreign Minister Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu and State Minister Mrs. Hirut Zemene led the attendees and invited guests on today’s Culture Tour event.

Foreign Minister Dr. Workneh said, “I’m delighted to be here. We’re celebrating this colorful Cultural Day at this beautiful scenery as one family gathering; this might be the first but surely not the last one.”

He further added “such events will make our African brothers and sisters feel more at home.”

Ethiopian Cultural Diplomacy Day also anticipates to invite the resident diplomatic and international community to similar programs in the future.

The event aims to build positive images of Ethiopia with a view to promoting Ethiopia’s cultural and historical assets to the international community.

The capital Addis Ababa is one of the world’s largest diplomatic hub,hosting the seat of the African Union and other international organizations.

Ethiopian Cultural Diplomacy Day is hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tourism Ethiopia, Culture and Tourism Bureau of Addis Ababa and other stakeholders.
